Swindon City of Sanctuary – Schools of Sanctuary (Pilot Scheme) Local Pledge

Swindon City of Sanctuary is part of the national City of Sanctuary network working in partnership with many organisations to build a culture of welcome, safety and inclusion for people seeking sanctuary in the UK. Our goal is to make Swindon proud to be a place of safety for all, especially for those seeking refuge from conflict and persecution.

Schools play a crucial role in building this culture of welcome, safety and inclusion by helping young people to make sense of the world, to become responsible citizens and to create positive change in their communities. A School of Sanctuary Award is formal, accredited recognition of the positive impact of a school’s role in building this culture of welcome, safety and inclusion.

A School of Sanctuary

  • fosters a culture of welcome, safety and inclusion for all, especially for people seeking sanctuary;
  • is a place for the whole school community to show commitment to learning about the human right to sanctuary and social justice;
  • builds empathy and intercultural awareness, where all can embrace and celebrate local, national and global cultural diversity and dispel negative myths and stereotypes;
  • promotes the voices and contributions of all people with lived experience of migration – especially people seeking sanctuary;
  • nurtures an understanding of the experiences of displaced people.
