Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
What Are Special Educational Needs?
A child is considered to have Special Educational Needs (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision. This may include children who:
- Have a greater difficulty in learning than most children of the same age; or
- Have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making full use of the educational facilities normally available to others of the same age.
Special educational provision refers to support that is additional to or different from the provision made for other children of the same age in mainstream schools.
Our Aims
At Peatmoor, we believe every child is entitled to a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum. We are committed to identifying barriers to learning early, understanding each child’s needs, and putting in place the right support to help them make progress however small the steps may be.
If you would like more information about SEND provision at Peatmoor, or if you have any concerns about your child’s progress, Mrs McDonald, our Special Educational Needs Co‑ordinator (SENCO), is always happy to help.
We offer informal drop‑in sessions throughout the year, or you can arrange an appointment via the school office.
Our Objectives
We aim to:
- Identify and monitor children’s needs as early as possible, including working closely with pre‑school settings.
- Plan an effective, tailored curriculum with clear targets that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time‑related (SMART).
- Involve parents, carers and children in setting and reviewing targets on Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Individual Provision Plans (IPPs).
- Ensure staff understand and follow the school’s procedures for identifying and supporting children with SEN.
- Work closely with external agencies when specialist advice or support is required.
Our Approach
We use a wide range of high‑quality interventions to support children’s learning. Each programme is carefully chosen to meet individual needs, and progress is regularly reviewed to ensure it is having the right impact.
