Phonics & Early Reading
Year 2
The children will learn:
- Spelling rules
- Prefixes and suffixes e.g. ‘in-’ and ‘-ed’
- The past tense
- Memory strategies for high frequency or topic words
- Proof-reading
- How to use a dictionary
- Where to put the apostrophe in words like ‘I’m’
Although formal phonics teaching is usually complete by the end of Year 1, children continue to use their knowledge as they move up the school. Phonics is taught for 20 minutes each day and is assessed termly to ensure all children are on track.

Year 1
At Peatmoor Primary School we use the scheme ‘Supersonic Phonic Friends’, We begin this in Reception and follow it through to the end of Year 1. The scheme is split into 5 phases which is then split across Reception and Year 1.
Firm Foundations in Phonics 1 – environmental sounds
Basics 2 – Initial letter sounds – phonemes
Basics 3 – Initial letter sounds plus digraphs and trigraphs
Basics 4 - Adjacent Consonants & Polysyllabic
Basics 5 – Split into two phases – choose to use and switch it.
